How to Reach Sintra
Flights: The nearest airport is Lisbon. Direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, and other major UK airports take about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Transfers: From Lisbon Airport, the metro to Oriente station takes 10 minutes, followed by a 45-minute train ride to Sintra. Taxis or rideshares go directly in around 30–40 minutes.
Costs: Metro tickets are €1.80, trains to Sintra €2.25 one-way, and taxis from the airport are about €30–€35.
Practical Information
Language: Portuguese is the official language, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
Local customs: Dinner is often late, usually starting after 8 pm, and meals are enjoyed at a relaxed pace.
Currency: Portugal uses the Euro (€). ATMs are common, and most places accept cards, but we recommend carrying some cash for small cafés or shops.
Getting around: Sintra is walkable, but its hills can be steep. Tuk-tuks and hop-on hop-off buses are popular (€5–€10).
A single bus ticket costs around €1.50.
Electricity: Standard voltage is 230V, with Type C and F plugs. UK visitors need an adaptor.
Time zone: Sintra runs on Western European Time (WET), the same as the UK.
Travel documents: UK nationals can stay in Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months.
